Phaedra Livingstone (PhD, OISE/UT 2003) is a museologist whose work focuses on gender representation and communication issues in museum practice. Feminist critiques of cultural production have tended to simply dismiss museums as 'cabinets of curiosities', and museology has largely overlooked feminist theory. Addressing these omissions, this presentation will illustrate Dr. Livingstone's approach to feminist critique/ evaluation of museums through discussion of (1) her analytical model and (2) recent projects she has conducted on exhibitions, collections, and visitors. Projects to be presented include her dissertation, (Reading the Science Centre: An interdisciplinary feminist analysis of museum communication), a fellowship with the Museum of Health Care, Kingston (Snake Oil and Mother's Milk: The representation of women in Victorian patent medicine advertising trade cards), and a curatorial project, Mount Sinai Hospital (My Grandmother was a Nurse: Toronto nursing in the 1930s and 1940s).
