This year, Ivan Petrovich Pavlov
(1849-1936) was awarded the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine for his work
on the physiology of the digestive glands, and particularly for his experiments
on nervous stimulation of gastric secretions that led to the discovery of the
conditioned reflexes. Pavlov’s research had significant influence in the
fields of neurology and psychology, and its impact on education theory and
practice was expressed a few years later in the U.S. through the development of
the behaviorist school, particularly in the works of Watson, Thorndike and
Skinner.
