Black Settlement in British North America

This period is represented by British rule. This period includes the war of 1812. The war of 1812 led to people who were loyal to the British war efforts being described as loyalist. Blacks who fought for the British during the war with America were called Black Loyalists. They were granted their freedom from slavery and in some cases land as compensation for their efforts in the war of 1812. This acted as a catalyst for the formation of many black settlements in early upper and lower Canada.
