Recognition of Prior Learning (project n° 98-73200-14): http://europa.eu.int/comm/development/south_africa/eprd1998.htm#tocref1_13 This project aims to develop an integrated nation-wide system for the Recognition of Prior Learning in the building industry in South Africa. The project will develop a sustainable, ongoing, nation-wide system of Recognition of Prior Learning, linked to the National Qualifications Framework, in the building industry and will redress inequities from the past by developing access to skilled employment opportunities in the construction industry. What's available? The official document "Action Plan on learning in the information society" is also available at: http://europa.eu.int/comm/development/south_africa/country.pdf. This legal base covers the administrative, procedural and legal aspects of implementing the EPRD in South Africa, with a financial reference amount of 500 million from 1996 to 1999. University of Cape Town: http://www.uct.ac.za/ Experiencial Learning website: http://www.uct.ac.za/depts/adult-ed/icel.htm "Experiential learning refers to a spectrum of meanings, practices and ideologies which emerge out of the work and commitments of policy makers, educators, trainers, change agents, and "ordinary" people all over the world. They see "experiential learning" - with different meanings - as relevant to the challenges they currently face: in their lives, in education, in institutions, in commerce and industry, in communities, and in society as a whole. What's available? The "Recognition of Prior Learning" website will be completed by February 2000 (http://www.uct.ac.za/depts/adult-ed/rpl.htm; contact information: Judy Harris, e-mail: jh@education.uct.ac.za). Also included in the website, the project "Research & Development Programme in the Recognition of Prior Learning", conducted between 1996 and 1999, (http://www.uct.ac.za/depts/adult-ed/rplproj.htm) aimed to investigate RPL as an alternative access mechanism into Higher Education - particularly for those adults who have historically been excluded.
