Participants no longer have to start from zero when enrolling in college programs. What’s available? The Prior Learning Assessment and Recognition (PLAR) Portfolio Development Course (http://www.cstec.ca/plar_course.html) is designed and structured to provide a positive introduction to college level training for steel industry learners. Professional Certification is the recognition of individuals who successfully demonstrate that they have the skills, knowledge and attitudes in their chosen occupation as set out in National Occupational Standards. Professional Certification represents ability and expertise. Achieving National Certification involves three steps: national exam, performance review and industry evaluation. The purpose of our interest in PLAR is to help individuals get the skills they need so that they can participate at their fullest potential in Canada's labour market. HRDC does not conduct prior learning assessments or give recognition for learning but this department advocates its use by organizations and institutions that deliver training. What’s available?
